Purpose and Benefits of the CV Outline

The CV format that you choose is very important and should be the one that allows you to best describe your qualifications in a professional manner, while including all relevant information. There are 3 different types of formats to choose from, each of which is discussed below:

1. The Chronological Format- This CV format is the most widely used and accepted because it lists your training and experience in order starting with the most recent job. It’s best used by the individual with a consistent employment history within the same field. It can be scanned quickly to pick out your achievements and growth throughout your experience working in the field for which you’re applying.

2. The Functional Format- This type of format highlights your skills, qualifications and past accomplishments at the very top of the page. Your work history is listed at the bottom without major details. The focus of the functional resume is placed on your abilities and what you have accomplished, instead of where and when the achievements took place. Since there is less focus on your work history, it’s best used by the individuals with a short work history, someone changing careers, a recent graduate seeking full time employment for the first time or by someone who has gaps in their work history.

3. The Combination Format- This type is basically a combination of the first two. The information is organized in such a way as to list your accomplishments and skills at the top but the information given is supported later in the resume by a detailed listing of your work history. When done correctly, this can be a powerful CV format that can get you noticed quickly.

Choose the CV format that best suits your work history and individual accomplishments and it should be an effective tool in helping you stand out from the competition.
