Tips On Securing A Good Career In A Bad Economy

A bad economy gets us all down-especially if we want to get a new job, and there seems to be no open positions, or not enough positions for the applicants. If you aren’t having much luck finding and getting jobs, then chances are-you need to revise your actions, resume, and/or search. We give you just the right tips to making the most out of your searching and applying for jobs, in a time when it is that much tougher to get the interview, not to mention the job.

1. Let Everyone Know: If you are on a job search that just isn’t yielding any results because of the downturn in the economy; do not think that the jobs aren’t out there. There are still a lot of positions that are seeking qualified individuals, and making sure you network as much as possible to find out about them is vital to success. Tell friends, family, colleagues, and acquaintances; and ask if they know of any positions in their companies or their friends’ companies. Just putting the information out there allows for that extra possibility of finding the right job.

2. Update Your Resume: If you’ve sent your resume out to countless companies and job positions and haven’t heard a thing back, this means your resume probably needs some work. Look at it objectively. Polish it for inconsistencies and awkward phrases. Use action words to make the skills more compelling and demonstrative. Include new achievements, education/training, and all new qualifications you can add to enhance your career applicability.

3. Attend Career Events: Do some research and be on the lookout for all general job fairs and events, as well as specific industry seminars and fairs according to your profession. This not only gives you further insight into what is valuable in today’s job economy; but also, who is hiring and for what positions.

4. Consider Freelancing: While you’re looking for your next dream job position, hold yourself over with contract jobs that give you practice, experience, and a side income. Get in touch with old contacts, network with new ones, and get in the game. Even doing freelance work in your position is better than doing nothing at all, plus it answers to market that cannot afford full time employees and the costly benefits and overhead they require.

5. Follow Those Jobs: If you want to improve your career situation and no one is hiring in your metropolitan area; well, then consider moving to somewhere that is. While this may seem a drastic solution; it could make all the difference to your career and life-meaning better pay, better position, better company.

6. Keep at It: Though job searching and networking may seem inconsequential, every single contact and job inquiry helps. All it takes is one person to mention your name for a position or one hiring manager to consider your resume; and that could lead to your next successful job position.
