Perfusionist Job Description

A Perfusionist works with anesthesiologists, surgeons and doctors to maintain normal lung and heart functioning during cardiac surgeries, vascular surgeries, orthopedic procedures and most other medical or surgical practices.

Preceding the procedure, a perfusionist will disinfect and sanitize the apparatus, and make sure that all the devices, instruments and machines are working correctly. Throughout the procedure, the perfusionist administers medications and drugs and takes charge of the heart-lung machine to ensure that the patient’s vital parameters (i.e. blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, and temperature) are normal.

A perfusionist needs to make modifications and changes in the monitoring apparatus during the surgeries; and uses different machines / equipment to enhance the circulation of blood and to fortify the working of the heart during the recovery stage. He also uses various devices to manage oxygen and carbon dioxide levels during the procedures.

In an emergency, when lung or heart failure occurs, a perfusionist is indispensable. His expertise, proficiency and skill can save the patient’s life.

Perfusionist Education, Certification and Training

• To become a Perfusionist, you need a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or a Certificate in Perfusion Science.
• You must pass from a recognized school, in Cardio-Vascular Perfusion. You need to conduct at least 75 perfusions during the period of training and should acquire a note of ‘acceptable clinical proficiency’ from the Medical school.
• You have to study the modern perfusionist trends, devices, technologies, and research methods to save patients’ lives.
• You then need to pass a written examination conducted by the America Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion to become a certified perfusionist.
• Notably, continuous learning and education, during the career is very essential.
