A phlebotomist job description involves working at hospitals, blood banks, medical centers and other diagnostic health care facilities. He collects blood from the donors, and the blood is used for investigations and analysis, and for blood donation.

He must adhere to the set norms and procedures of collecting the blood, and should make sure that the patient does not suffer infection.

Before drawing the blood, he will find an accessible vein. He will then place a tourniquet, and use an anti-septic over the area. He must explain the procedure to the patient / donor and make him feel at ease during the blood collection. Phlebotomist Education, Certification and Training

• A high school certificate or an equivalent is necessary to become a phlebotomist.

• Next, you need to enroll at vocational schools and colleges that provide phlebotomy programs.

• You will be provided with classroom schooling and clinical experience as well; and in addition to collection of blood and storage of blood, you will be taught physiology, pathology, anatomy, and first aid.

• This coursework prepares you for National Certification Examinations. You may also meet the criteria for Certificate Exams without finishing the Phlebotomy Program. Non-graduates must have a full-time experience working as a phlebotomist, and must successfully complete the stipulated number of venipuncture procedures.

• Before giving you the license, the State Licensing Board requires phlebotomists to work under the guidance of another technician.
