What began as the first integrated college in the South, has blossomed into one of the “most distinctive colleges in the nation”. Typically, students must be from the Appalachian region, agree to work 15 hours per week, have financial need, and have academic talent. Moreover, if admitted, a college student is also given the free use of a laptop while enrolled.

College of the Ozarks: The College of the Ozarks –also known as “Hard Work U”-offers a different kind of arrangement than racking up years and years of debt for schooling. They function as a school that has students work their way through school at 15 hours per week, and 40 hour weeks during two school vacations; and for this, they waive all tuition. To be admitted to Hard Work U, students must have financial need, show promise in academics, agree to the abstinence from drugs and alcohol, and attend Chapel regularly.

The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art: The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art is one of the country’s most well known education institutions. Students who are accepted to this art, engineering, and architecture school receive full college funding; but must be able to keep up with the school’s tough education program.
