Writing a cover letter can be a lot of work, even with all the tips and help there is out there on the subject. While most of us have-in fact-created a cover letter, and have gotten some positive response from it-or from our resume, this is not to say that the cover letter that you are sending out is as effective and polished as it could be. • Use Formatting Techniques: Though it has often been a mistake for applicants to use too much dramatic formatting-such as in the way of font styles, underlining, and bolding-this is not to say that you shouldn’t use these techniques at all in your cover letter. Instead, use the bolding and underlining minimally and with good reason-on a point or skill that you consider a priority to know about.

• Give an Example: Another great way to grab the attention of a potential employer is to show them with an example of what great ideas you might implement if you were given the job. This shows the employer that you are going the extra mile, and also, gives them a taste of your work style, goals, and creativity. Make sure to be general in this capacity, because as an applicant-you have a lot to learn about the company.

• Quantify Whenever Possible: While it is common to say how long you may have spent in an industry in a cover letter, most applicants do not go beyond that. If bring a lot of experience in various industries, positions, and skills-tell them how many years and to what advanced degree you can offer them.

• Bring Humanity to It: While most people offer cover letters that are formulaic and dry, you can bring a sense of humanity to your application; by introducing a personal goal for yourself or an experience in your career that made you a better person. Make sure whatever it is that you don’t spend too much time on it, and connect it your why you are applying for this position.
