What if the ad does not request a cover letter

If you are drafting your cover letter for the first time, or perhaps the 50th time and want to ensure you get it right; you probably have a lot of questions as regards format and content. What goes in a cover letter? Do I need to create one? What is the proper format? Of all the questions regularly asked about cover letters, perhaps, the most common is whether or not it is even necessary in all cases at all. Many people think that it is just an added beneficial approach for an application, but they would be wrong. Many people think that there are conditions of when you should use a cover letter to apply for a job, but they would be wrong. If you are wondering if you need to use a cover letter for even jobs that do not request cover letters in their applications; you do need to create one if you want any chance of getting an interview.

Why is a cover letter so important in an address to an employer? Employers do not require them because they want a formality addressed-as you may think-but rather, because the cover letter serves a lot of functions, and makes their job of hiring easier. If a cover letter is created correctly, it will encapsulate career experience, qualifications, goals, and a compelling reason why that candidate is the right match for the position. It also leaves opportunity for the candidate to explain inconsistencies in their attached resume. All of this information helps create a storyline of an applicant’s career value and experience in one quick read address. This way, an employer does not have to thumb through many multi-page resumes and try to analyze them for the goals, skills, and reason for hire one by one. You offer that to them in the cover letter.

This said, though you may think you need only send what is requested in a job posting; a cover letter is considered as important and standard as a resume; and so, you must always include one. Moreover, even if an employer does not want to see a cover letter in an application-which is very rare-they will be relieved that you did include one-because, as was noted before, it makes their job all the easier.
