1. Prepare Early
Preparing early for a career as a police officer includes living a healthy lifestyle in mind and body. A good character record with a great physical health record is among the main prerequisites for becoming a police officer. Then of course comes the education - the more the better - but a High School graduation will suffice in most cases.

2. Choose Your Subjects
While studying for your High School diploma, or continuing education, it will help if you study physics, psychology, math and computer applications. Having behavioral sciences in your portfolio also seems to be a scoring point when applying for the post of a police officer.

Most of the students choosing a career as a police officer will opt for subjects like criminal justice, human behavior, psychology, computer science and many more. It may seem unnecessary; however, the stronger your background in a subject related to being an officer is, the stronger your chances of getting the job will be and you will be better equipped to deal with the job as well.

3. Get In Shape
The job demands that applicants be extremely physically fit. Thus, it is strongly recommended that you join sports in school as well as college and continue these physical activities even after leaving school or college. Weight training and attending gym regularly would be a wise idea. If you are not physically fit your application will definitely be rejected. Being physically fit includes good eyesight and hearing, having normal blood pressure, no diabetes or other ailments.

4. Keep Your Record Clean
There are going to be background checks on you and your activities and even the company you have kept or are keeping. So, if you want to be selected for training as a police officer you will need to have these records clean. If, by any quirk of fate you have been in trouble or have been in bad company you are going to have to prove you have turned a new leaf. This is not too difficult, just be determined and let your determination show.

5. The Civil Service Test
After the checks, and provided you get through, you will be required to sit for the civil service examination, which will be administered by the department you are applying to. The better your score, the better your chances are of becoming a police officer.

Once you pass the test the department will put you through their own training program, which may last from a few months to a year and then you will be assigned a station and duties to follow you dream of life as a police officer.
