How To Build A Successful Resume

There are a number of must haves when you are creating a resume not just to apply with, but that one that will also succeed. You may have created many resumes in your life, but if you don’t know the aspects that make for a successful resume, well, the chances of you actually succeeding at getting the position you want, will probably be slim. This said, you may wonder what these must haves are. They are listed here for your convenience.

Make It Professional:

The first consideration that you need to make if you want your resume to be successful is to ensure that it is as professional as possible. This means, that no matter if you already have an existing resume to work from, or are just building your first resume for success; that the presentation of your resume must be as professional as possible. The grammar and spacing should be correct, the points clear, and the overall look of your resume should be attractive to anyone seeing it for the first time.

Include All Basic Elements:

Secondly, make sure that you have included all basic elements of a professional resume. Employers want to see three basic things in your resume: that you have the proper education, employment experience, and skills to offer their position. This said, you need to include respective sections detailing how you have gained these areas of experience in your career life, and also, what value it holds for the position that you seek. For education, include dates of schooling, degrees obtained, coursework completed, name and location of school, and any achievements won. For employment history, include the past ten years of employment, name of company, employment title, dates employed, and responsibilities and/or achievements in each position. For skills and achievements or other professional experience: list bullet points of achievements and awards won, names of these awards, descriptions of achievements, special skills and proficiencies, and applicable licenses and certifications.

Be Persuasive:

It is simply not enough to have all the career qualifications that a position wants, but you must also have the ability to persuade an employer why you are best for the position. Consider, especially in the current employment climate, how many resumes an employer gets for one open position. This said, many could have the same or more qualifications than you have listed on your resume; so you need to persuade them why you are the better applicant for the position over all the others. This means using action words to signify action and participation, including all possible transferable skills, and various connections between what you have accomplished and done in your career thus far-and what you can offer to a new position.

Career Focused:

As a part of a successful resume, you also need a resume that is focused on your specific career and industry. What does this mean? You first, need to have a clear idea of what employers are seeking in your position and field, and second, how to implement these into your own resume; so that they get all that they are searching for in your resume’s qualifications. This said, only include what is true and accurate, as an employer will check out these details either before, during, or after an interview with you. Moreover, they will not take much notice of a resume that seems generalized to an industry or non specific career. They will likely think that you are just seeking work, and not interested proactively in the position that they have to offer.
