Internships help foster career development in a college student or grad while also helping a company with assorted tasks and initiatives. Though you may have heard all about internships, perhaps, you do not know about what international internships have to offer. Aside from just being an exciting step out of your comfort zone, they offer a wide range of profession specific opportunities for those interested in learning their profession in another region of the world. International Internships
International internships are often considered for those college minded individuals who are seeking international careers. A student can participate in an international internship for student credit, but most often, these opportunities offer only learning. Though one might think that all international internships must be located outside the U.S.-and many are-it is not limited to outside the U.S., and there are many programs part of international organizations. Most often, international internships are short lived-and are during the summer or a semester, but some longer internships are also available.

Teaching Abroad
Another option if you are considering an international internship, and your field of study is in the neighborhood of English is teaching English abroad in TEFL programs (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). These programs typically have a minimum working period of two years, and require a full college degree to begin. The areas typically always in need of TEFL programs are located in Asia and Eastern Europe, and are paid experiences-sometimes with room and board, other times with stipend or salary.

Short Term Paid Work Abroad
One option for the individual looking to get experience in other areas of the world is that of what is called short term paid work abroad. This would be like any part time work offered here. The most common forms of these jobs are in childcare, temping, farm work, restaurant work, and the like. This is a good option for someone looking to pay their way while in another country; however, it is advised that a number of upfront costs remain to pay, such as: airfare, transportation, program fees, and spending money. Duration of these programs are usually 6 months.

Volunteering Abroad
Lastly, another classification of the international internship is just volunteering abroad through your university’s volunteer abroad system. Volunteers go to all regions of the world, and live with local residents. Common jobs include social services and support, and depending on your career goals-could be very applicable and valuable for your resume.
