How To Have A Successful Lunch Interview

This article provides information on How To Have A Successful Lunch Interview

Interviews are never easy-no matter who you are; and the rules are always changing. One of the newest ways that employers and recruiters are approaching the prospect of interviews is by conducting what is called the lunch interview. Heard of it? The lunch interview is a means of learning about applicants when time is stretched in a hiring manager’s life. If the interview usually intimidates you, you are probably overwhelmed with the idea of having to eat with a possible employer on top of answering their difficult questions. Here’s how to succeed at it and have a graceful lunch interview.

Table Manners
It should go without saying that any time you are eating-especially in public-that you use the correct table etiquette. This means no elbows on the table, chew with your mouth closed, use your napkin on your lap, etc etc. This is the first rule of conduct for anyone who doesn’t want to represent themselves in a negative light over a lunch interview with a potential employer.

Be Polite
Know that all aspects of your lunch will be observed on the part of the interviewer, as well as analyzed in respect to the position that you are applying for. This said, make sure to be on your best behavior by being courteous to the wait staff, people around you, and everyone you come in contact with. One of the last things you want to present to the employer is that you cannot treat other people in a professional and courteous manner. From clients to supervisors and employees, you need to be able to effectively communicate with them if hired; and do so in a considerate manner.

Order with Caution
It is current etiquette that if you are invited to a meal with an interviewer, that they will be paying for your meal as a part of the interview. This said, don’t order everything from appetizers to dessert. Order your main meal and a beverage, and keep it modest. The last thing you want to do is to look like you are trying to cash in on their good graces by ordering an expensive meal on them.

Choose Something Easy
Though you might be hankering for the sloppy joes or something sloppy, refrain while on a lunch interview. It often can detract from the main purpose of the interview-to be able to communicate about your qualifications for the job. This can’t be done easily if you are constantly trying to get reins on sloppy food, and spilling it all over the place-including on your face. Choose something, instead, that is easy to eat-such as a sandwich, salad or soup for easier conversation.

Thank Them
Lastly, at the conclusion of the meal and interview; make sure that you not only thank them for the interview; but also, for the meal. It shows that you didn’t just expect to be given a meal, while also not offending them by offering to pay for it yourself. Shake their hand, and thank them for the opportunity and their time and consideration.
