Below, we take a look at the ten job sectors that are most likely to see a decrease in job availability in 2010-due to the recent economic downturn.
1. Postal Service: The projected lessening of available jobs in the postal service is due in part to the economy, but also is greatly impacted by the fact that people more and more use email to send communications-not snail mail. This said, there has already been talk about cutting off certain days of normal mail delivery or increasing mail prices as a result.
2. Department Stores: People spend less time in department stores now, more than ever. As a result, 10% of their jobs will disappear. Why? People spend most of their time shopping in specialty stores and online; but overall, people are spending less, and this too has a huge impact.
3. Printing: Another industry to lose a slew of jobs this year are jobs held in the printing business. Why? For the same reason as the postal service-because people are reading, communicating, and interacting online-and using less and less printed materials. The reasons are twofold-for convenience and be more and more green in using less resources i.e. trees.
4. Newspapers/Magazines/Periodicals: Closely related to the printing services industry is that of media printed on paper. More and more, people are choosing to read their news and magazines online for both convenience and also to use less paper.
5. Semiconductor Manufacturing: This industry has been steadily losing jobs due to problems in transportation industries; and this year is expected to lose approximately 33% of its jobs.
