Analytical Chemist Job Description


Summary: An analytical chemist is an individual who uses a variety of techniques in discovering the make-up of a substance. Their main responsibility is to determine each substance, then understand its behaviour in various conditions. A chemist approach to work is flexible and methodical. They are more effective through teamwork. Although most analytical chemists find employment in pharmaceutical companies, they can also be employed in the government and other private companies of various industries.

Duties: Analytical Chemists present information on compounds by analyzing samples from different sources. He uses varying techniques and instruments during analysis, such as ion chromatography, gas-ion chromatography, HPLC, and spectroscopy, among others. When documenting scientific data, an analytical chemist interprets information based on strict guidelines. He has the capability to use a variety of analytical software, techniques and instrumentation. He keeps updated with new techniques in analyzing chemicals, drug products or other substances. He coordinates with different teams, ensures validation of methods and equipments, and implements safety procedure and health issues in all stages of work.

Education and Training Requirements: To become an analytical chemist, one should obtain a 4-year degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and other science-related fields. Although it is not a requirement to have a PhD, those with an MSc or PhD would have an advantage for promotion and professional development. Some companies would require analytical chemists to have training in first aid or other safety techniques related to work.

Knowledge and Skills Requirements: Analytical Chemists are confident people. They are able to inspire others to investigate and solve complex problems. They must have the ability to explain and present technical data to non-technical people. Other important skills analytical chemists must possess include strong problem-solving skills, people skills, advanced computer skills, technical writing skills, organizational skills and communication skills, among others.

Working Conditions: Analytical Chemist may work from 9 to 5 with possibility to extend working hours, depending on the deadlines and schedule to meet. Sometimes, part time job are also available. An Analytical Chemist works and communicates with different teams from inside the company and third party professionals. One can work as freelance but company usually have their own experts.

Salary: An Analytical Chemist could receive an average pay of $54,000 per year, but it may vary depending on individual benefits, certification and experience, industry, company location and size, or other factors. Those who go for a managerial position may receive a pay amounting to $59,000 annually.
