Agricultural Engineer Job Description
The job of an agricultural engineer is to solve problems of farmers and other people from the agricultural field. He/she improves the quality and increases production of farm products. However, the tasks of an agricultural engineer may vary depending on specializations, such as food engineering, soil and water conservation, farm structures, electrification and mechanical power.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an agricultural engineer: a successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering. College-level teaching positions and research engineers may require a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Some companies may have licensing requirements.
Skills of an agricultural engineer include but are not limited to: good experience in landscaping; knowledge in irrigation systems, advanced skills in physical science and mathematics; excellent oral and written communication skills; analytical and problem-solving skills; genuine interest in agricultural activities and production; advanced knowledge in agricultural engineering equipment and methods.
Specific work elements of the job as an agricultural engineer depend largely on the specialization. The job of engineers working in farm structures include designing and planning ventilation, sanitation and heating systems for farmhouses, barns and other animal shelters. Engineers specialized in electrification may be assigned to design electrical power systems for certain regions or develop new ways of using electric power in dehydrating food or drying and curing crops.
