Anthropologist Job Description



The job of an anthropologist is to investigate human beings and their social, cultural and physical origins. He/she must serve as social scientists specializing in archeology, physical anthropology, cultural anthropology or linguistic anthropology. The tasks vary greatly depending on specialization, but anthropologists mainly study language, beliefs, values, traditions, possessions and other individual or group characteristics of human beings.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an anthropologist: A successful candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in geology, geography, human anatomy, genetics, or other related field and a doctoral degree in anthropology.

Skills of an anthropologist include but are not limited to: strong research skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills; and a genuine love for knowledge about people.

Specific work elements of the job as an anthropologist include: making comparative studies in relations to human distribution, races, origin, evolution, culture and physical characteristics; gathering data on human artifacts, social customs and human physique; examining physical objects such as clothing, tools, art or homes left by past human cultures which are used in determining customs, history and living habits of earlier civilizations; applying anthropological techniques and data to solution of problems in human relations; applying anthropological concepts to current problems; specializing in the study of language and culture; studying the personality and culture of individuals or complex societies.
