Archeologist Job Description



The job of an archeologist is to conduct research used in reconstructing record of past culture and human life by collecting and analyzing human remains, artifacts, architectural structures and features recovered via excavation or other discovery methods of earlier civilizations.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an archeologist: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in archeology. Larger companies or work that involves teaching or research may require a master’s degree or a Ph.D in archeology.

Skills of an archeologist include but are not limited to: knowledge of important principles and methods in archeology; a genuine passion or arts, architecture, ancient history and ancient or modern languages; strong research, analytical and statistics skills; good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written); extensive knowledge of the government laws and regulations related to archeology.

Specific work elements of the job as an archeologist include: writing, presenting and publishing reports of discoveries; comparing findings; researching, surveying and analyzing collected data; studying ancient objects and structures; developing and testing theories concerning the origin or development of past cultures; recording exact locations and conditions of artifacts after being discovered; assessing archeological sites for conservation, development or management purposes; and describing physical properties or attributes of artifacts.
