Art Director Job Description



The job of an art director is gather the needs of clients to be used in generating effective visual branding, which include developing or improving the look and feel of websites, magazines, products, support materials and other advertisement mediums. He/she must strategize, design and produce high-end results within the client’s budget and deadlines.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an art director: A successful candidate should possess a degree in fine arts, photography, graphic design or other related field. Some employers may not look for formal education, particularly if an art director has put together an impressive portfolio.

Specific work elements of the job as an art director include: choosing an illustrator, photographer, model, location or props needed for an ad; retouching an ad that needs editing; collaborating with a copywriter in developing concepts for the ad; analyzing client’s goals and using design knowledge or principles in developing how the ad will look and say; creating a rough layout or storyboard using design computer programs and presenting the layout to clients; and supervising a team of artists, writers, photographers or designers. Tasks of an art supervisor include all the duties of art directors, but include managing all art directors in an account or department.
