Art Instructor Job Description
The job of an art instructor involves presenting art information to students by showing examples of selected art, providing students with tools and raw materials to produce their own art, teaching students how to use tools and raw materials properly and encouraging students to show creativity and individuality with their artworks.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an art instructor: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, history, art or a related field. K-12 school jobs may require candidates to have a Bachelor of Science degree in either elementary, middle or secondary education. Most companies look for teaching certification and experience as an art teacher or fine artist.
Skills of an art instructor include but are not limited to: expertise in areas such as knitting, sewing, weaving, sculpting, enameling, jewelry, ceramics, drawing, painting and other arts; strong teaching and interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; extensive knowledge in art history and mediums of art; and a genuine passion in teaching art.
Specific work elements of the job as an art instructor include: preparing and delivering lectures; facilitating and moderating class discussions in a classroom or studio setting; employing instructional technologies; contributing to the development of instructional materials; developing evaluation methods and analyzing student learning; maintaining accurate records of students and their progress; preparing syllabi and approved course outlines; performing other tasks as required.
