Art Teacher Job Description



The job of an art teacher is to instruct students in creating art using a variety of methods such as drawing, painting, sculpting, designing or other means. He/she may specialize in teaching one or more areas of art, such as art history, commercial art or illustration.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an art teacher: A successful candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, studio arts or visual arts. In order to teach, local teaching certification is required.

Skills of an art teacher include but are not limited to: strong research and teaching skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to teach students of all ages; superb interpersonal skills; proven organizational skills; and extensive knowledge in a wide range of art forms, including design, photography, ceramics, digital arts, fashion design, painting, jewelry, printmaking, calligraphy, cinematography, sculpture and drawing.

Specific work elements of the job as an art teacher include: preparing lesson plans and course timelines; selecting art supplies, raw materials and books for courses; demonstrating methods to students; evaluating student progress and giving advice for improvements; consulting students, parents or counselors to resolve problems about grades or personality; accompanying students on field trips; and planning contests and arranging art exhibits.
