Assistant Principal Job Description



The job of an assistant principal is to help a principal in various aspects of school administration. Most assistant principals formerly hold teaching positions and use their jobs as assistant principals for preparing for a job as the principal. The number of assistant principals in a single school depends largely on the student population.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an assistant principal: A successful candidate must possess a degree in educational supervision or education administration. Some schools prefer candidates with a specialized degree or doctorate in education administration, while others have licensure requirements and require assistant principals to pursue continuing education to renew their license.

Skills of an assistant principal include but are not limited to: strong research and teaching skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to teach students of all ages; superb interpersonal skills; and proven organizational skills.

Specific work elements of the job as an assistant principal include: scheduling student classes, ordering school supplies and books, coordinating with cafeteria and transportation staff, and other support services. Assistant principals usually handle student problems related to attendance and discipline, organizing social events and recreational programs, and counsel students on educational or personal matters. Some assistant principals also help in developing new curricula. Others are responsible for evaluating teachers, handling school-community relations and completing other tasks of the principal.
