Attorney Job Description



An attorney is responsible for representing a person, company, organization or even a country in legal matters. Generally, attorneys act as advocates for their clients within the legal system and advisors in dealing with clients’ legal rights, options and obligations. The specific tasks of attorneys vary by specializations such as tax, immigration, real estate, defense, litigation, medical, fraud, or divorce, among many others.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an attorney: Regardless of specialization, a successful candidate must possess a 4-year degree in any field that includes communication, research and logical thinking, followed by a 4-year law degree from an American Bar Associated accredited school. To practice law, candidates should have passed licensing examination or be admitted to its bar.

Skills of an attorney include but are not limited to: excellent interpersonal skills that can win trust of clients and public (jury), superb creativity, perseverance and reasoning abilities; knowledge of courtroom procedure, confidence in delivering speeches, analytical skills used for complex legal issues and a genuine adherence and responsibility to a strict code of ethics.

Specific work elements of the job as an attorney include: suggest course of action needed in specific personal or business legal problems; research previous court rulings and analyze cases to be used in a client’s particular situation, advise clients of their legal rights and obligations and use technology or other processes in developing arguments and organizing evidence.
