Auto Mechanic Job Description




The job of an Auto Mechanic involves inspecting and repairing brakes, engines and other parts of various vehicles, such as cars, trucks or buses. He/she is an expert in performing routine car maintenance needed in preventing breakdowns and resolving a wide range of car problems. Mechanics may own their own garages or be employed in service centers or automobile manufacturing companies. Some of them choose an area of expertise, such as engine, transmission systems, wheels, or bodywork, among others.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an Auto Mechanic: A successful candidate must possess a high school diploma and coursework in automobile maintenance, mechanical drawing, metal work or a similar subject. Bigger companies may require mechanics to complete 2-year courses offered by community, trade or vocational colleges, which include both classroom and hands-on instruction. Certification is an advantage, but not mandatory. To become a certified mechanic, he/she must pass an exam and have at least 2 years of relevant experience.

Skills of an Auto Mechanic include but are not limited to: Advanced knowledge in the components and mechanisms of various vehicles, the interaction of vehicle components and systems, as well as computerized diagnostic tools; strong customer service and problem-solving skills; proven diagnostic, mechanical and technical skills, and effective communication skills in discussing car problems with clients, among others.

Specific work elements of the job as an Auto Mechanic include but are not limited to: Diagnosing problems quickly, replacing or repairing faulty parts, inspecting various parts and systems to check for problems, customizing car parts, performing tune-ups and test drives to new or faulty vehicles; and undergoing preventive maintenance procedures, among others. Auto mechanics with specialization are assigned to work on their expertise, such as transmission technicians who work on hydraulic pumps, couplings, gear trains and other components of a transmission.
