Automotive Engineer Job Description
An automotive engineer is responsible for designing, developing and producing vehicles and their component parts. Some automotive engineers specialize in areas such as electronics and control systems, aerodynamics and thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, fuel technology and emissions, or powertrain. Tasks of automotive engineer also vary depending on the department assigned, such as design, research, development, production.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an automotive engineer: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in automotive engineering, 2+ years experience in the field and specialization in programs such as engine principles, manual transmission, motorsport technology, powertrain systems, fluid mechanism and heat transfer, automotive design and manufacturing, circuits and electronics, or engine electrical systems.
Skills of an automotive engineer include but are not limited to: advanced knowledge in mathematics, physics, geometry, statistics and chemistry; strong problem-solving and organizational skills; outstanding writing, speaking, listening and interpersonal skills, extensive knowledge in engineering disciplines, design and computer programs; and must be detail-oriented and innovative.
Specific work elements of the job as an automotive engineer include: designing vehicle components, systems, and assembly lines; discussing with suppliers about detailed specifications, cost and delivery; implementing test to ensure safe operation; implementing new technologies to support the development processes; applying electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and thermodynamic principles in resolving problems.
