Bartender Job Description
The job of a Bartender involves preparing and serving drinks to clients in restaurants and bars; mixing new drinks based on customer orders, maintaining liquor stock and bar supplies, and ensuring customers meet the age requirements for the purchase of tobacco or alcohol.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Bartender: A successful candidate must be at least 21 years old and possess a high school diploma with at least 1 year experience as a bartender. Most bartenders obtain experience on the job, but others complete bartending courses in vocational schools. They must also learn about state and local laws concerning the sale of alcohol drinks. In some locations, bartenders must possess licensure and health certificate.
Skills of a Bartender include but are not limited to: Superb customer service skills, marketing and sales skills, extensive knowledge of rules, laws, court procedures related to alcohol consumption, mathematics skills, and ability to work well independently and as part of a team. He/she should also be able to multi-task and have good memory when handling multiple orders.
Specific work elements of the job as a Bartender include but are not limited to: Mixing ingredients to prepare drinks, washing utensils and glassware after using, pouring beer or wine to customers, collecting payment and operating a cash register, serving food to customers at the bar, cleaning up after customers, checking identification to ensure customers meet legal drinking age, determining if a customer has had too much alcohol, ordering bar supplies from vendors, monitoring inventories, and creating new drink recipes, among others.
