Bus Driver Job Description
The job of a Bus Driver involves picking up and dropping off passengers at stations, bus stops, schools, work office and other designated locations. Drivers are responsible for the safety of its bus’ passengers at all times and for meeting scheduled routes even with traffic. They find work in schools, government agencies and private transit companies, among others.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Bus Driver: A successful candidate must possess at least a high school diploma, several years of driving experience and good vision. The bus driver must also have a valid professional driver’s license and at least 2 years heavy vehicle driving experience without any driving-related legal cases. He/she should also have basic mathematics knowledge needed in following timetables or maps and performing calculations.
Skills of a Bus Driver include but are not limited to: Advanced knowledge in mechanical components of a bus, operation monitoring skills and effective listening and verbal communication skills. He/she must also possess social perceptiveness, critical thinking, time management, reading comprehension, coordination and the ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
Specific work elements of the job as a Bus Driver include but are not limited to: Inspecting vehicles, oil, water and gas levels before departure, driving vehicles based on specified routes or destinations, parking at loading areas, assisting passengers with baggage, collecting cash fares or tickets, reporting accidents and delays, advising passengers to use seat belts while on vehicle, and performing maintenance on various bus parts, among others.
