Computer Operator Job Description
The job of a Computer Operator involves monitoring, managing and controlling the operating procedures of computer hardware systems. He/she operates most types of computers, including networks, mainframes and minicomputers, among others. Operators also solve any error messages and operating problems related to the computer hardware and may enter commands at computer terminals and peripheral devices.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Computer Operator: A successful candidate must possess a high school diploma and experience in operating systems. Many companies would require formal computer training in technical or community schools, followed by specialization in a particular field, equipment or routine.
Skills of a Computer Operator include but are not limited to: Extensive knowledge in computer hardware and general computer procedures, technical writing, effective verbal and written communication skills, organizational and multi-tasking skills as well as problem-solving skills. He/she should also be analytical, inventive, creative, patient, and detail-oriented.
Specific work elements of the job as a Computer Operator include but are not limited to: Entering commands and activating controls on computers and other equipments; monitoring system errors or failures; recording and notifying supervisors of equipment malfunction; responding to program errors by terminating or correcting the problem; operating spreadsheet programs and other software; retrieving and sorting program outputs; sending data to users; loading peripheral equipments; answering telephone calls to help computer users with problems, among others.
