Database Administrator Job Description
The job of a Database Administrator involves managing the security, integrity and performance of a database. He/she is responsible for testing and implementing a database, planning and coordinating security measures to safeguard databases, troubleshooting problems and making sure these systems operate effectively at all times.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Database Administrator: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in information technology or computer science. Those with certification on databases such as Microsoft SQL Server or a master’s degree in information systems receive more opportunities. Advanced knowledge in physics, computer science, telecommunications and mathematics is helpful.
Skills of a Database Administrator include but are not limited to: Strong analytical and organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, effective customer service orientation, advanced technical writing skills and ability to explain problems using layman terms. The database administrator must also be able to multi-task, work well under pressure as part of a team and independently.
Specific work elements of the job as a Database Administrator include but are not limited to: Developing standards or guidelines to be used in operation and acquisition of software; modifying existing database or management systems; supervising testing or installation of computer systems or databases; training staff or users in handling programs or databases; evaluating industry trends in database systems; writing and coding logical database descriptions; as well as reviewing workflow charts, among others.
