Electrician Job Description
The job of an Electrician involves installing and repairing street lights, electronic wiring, appliances, fixtures, and other electric equipments using hand or power tools. He/she is responsible for locating cause of electrical problems and correcting these breakdowns; connecting wires to transformers, circuit breakers or other components; and inspecting electrical equipments, components or systems to locate defects, make adjustments or avoid hazards.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an Electrician: A successful candidate must possess a high school diploma and a four-year apprenticeship program with courses in electrical theory, motor repair, wire splicing, mathematics, electrical circuits, welding and electrical control. Electricians must also be in good health, have accurate color perception and aptitude in physics, trigonometry, mathematics and algebra. Many places also require electricians to obtain a license and keep updated with building regulations, public safety and laws.
Skills of an Electrician include but are not limited to: Leadership, managerial and organizational skills, problem-solving and analytical skills, effective communication skills, knowledge in using hand and power tools, and ability to respond quickly with electrical problems, among others.
Specific work elements of the job as an Electrician include but are not limited to: Installing, testing and maintaining electrical wiring, appliances, fixtures or apparatus; diagnosing broken systems and correcting the problems’ connecting wires to transformers or circuit breakers; inspecting electrical equipments or systems; planning layout of wiring, fixtures or equipments in conformance to building or local codes; training and directing workers; preparing blueprints and installing cables, among others.
