Elementary Teacher Job Description
The job of an Elementary Teacher involves teaching languages, mathematics, social studies, science or other subjects to children ages 5 to 10. He/she uses computers, books, music, games, artwork and other methods to teach kids on how to solve problems, understand concepts and basic skills needed in life.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an Elementary Teacher: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in an Education-related field and Early Childhood Education certification. Some institutions would require teachers to have a master’s degree. Continuing education is an integral part of teaching.
Skills of an Elementary Teacher include but are not limited to: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, superior leadership skills, resourcefulness and creativity and ability to work with children easily. He/she must also be energetic, creative, patient, cheerful and can be able to motivate students.
Specific work elements of the job as an Elementary Teacher include but are not limited to: Establishing and enforcing rules for behavior; observing and evaluating student performance, health, behavior and social development; preparing materials, lesson plans and class activities; adapting teaching methods to meet student interests; planning and conducting activities; instructing students individually or in groups; establishing objectives for lessons and projects; grading homework and class work; reading books to students; speaking with parents or guardians about student behavior and academic problems; attending staff meetings; supervising assistant teachers and volunteers, sponsoring extracurricular activities, and performing other tasks assigned.
