Fashion Designer Job Description



The job of a Fashion Designer involves creating designs for shoes, clothing and accessories. Their job is to predict buyer trends through research, come up with hand-drawn or computer-aided designs, and choose materials and colors for each product. Fashion designers may specialize in one type of item – such as shoes, accessories, or clothes.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Fashion Designer: A successful candidate must possess a 2-year associate’s degree or 4-year bachelor’s degree in design or fine arts. They must be highly knowledgeable in textiles, fashion trends, colors and proportion.

Skills of a Fashion Designer include but are not limited to: Creativity and style, knowledge of the fashion industry and its history, business know-how, pattern-making and sewing skills, sales and marketing skills, eye for details of proportion, balance and color, manual drawing and advanced computer skills, and effective communication skills.

Specific work elements of the job as a Fashion Designer include but are not limited to: Discussing design ideas with management and sales team; determining prices for items; developing a set of products; directing and coordinating workers to create garments; identifying target markets and fashion trends; researching clothing styles and history; sewing together pieces of fabrics; visiting textile showrooms and industry events to gather information about trends; sketching draft designs; collaborating with other designers; and adapting various fashion ideas for mass production, among others.
