Game Designer Job Description



The job of a Game Designer involves creating a video game and defining how the game is played. They are responsible for thinking of the story, characters, settings, props, rules of the game and different ways the game can be played.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Game Designer: A successful candidate must possess a degree in computer engineering, computer science, game design or a similar field and years of experience playing video games. Courses important for a career in this field include game prototyping, integrated video design, level design and project management. Game designers could also take up specialty courses such as programming special effects, game mathematics, or artificial intelligence applications.

Skills of a Game Designer include but are not limited to: Proven leadership and coordination skills, a high level of creativity and imagination, creative writing and storytelling skills, advanced skills in numerous software packages, understanding of the industry and target audience, advanced drawing and 3D design skills, multi-tasking and organizational skills, ability to work in a team and independently and ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.

Specific work elements of the job as a Game Designer include but are not limited to: Conducting research about what kind of games people want to play; developing and presenting game ideas with team members and investors; working with a team of programmers and artists to produce a game prototype; developing a game design document that describes the rules, settings, characters and other details of the game; overseeing and helping in the game development; making adjustments to the original technical specifications; training game testers; and ensuring game experience meets the original goal, among others.
