Interior Designer Job Description



The job of an Interior Designer involves planning and designing interiors of buildings, homes, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, banks, airplanes, ships and even stage sets. They are usually employed by interior design firms, retail stores and architectural firms, among others. Some have their own businesses.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an Interior Designer: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in interior design or a similar field with course work in interior design. All interior design students must undergo at least 1 year apprenticeship. After graduation, they need to obtain license and become members of the American Society of Interior Designers.

Skills of an Interior Designer include but are not limited to: Organizational and time-management skills, a high level of creativity and artistic ability, leadership and team management skills, interpersonal skills, proficiency in CAD programs and considerable knowledge in interior design practices and principles, and drafting procedures.

Specific work elements of the job as an Interior Designer include but are not limited to: Communicating with clients to determine architectural specifications and preferences, budgets and other interior design details; providing clients with recommendations on space planning, furnishings, layout and color schemes; transforming ideas into illustrations or drawings; and subcontracting fabrication or installation of fixtures, carpeting, wall, furniture or other related items, among others.
