Janitor Job Description
The job of a Janitor involves maintaining a designated area and performing heavy cleaning duties, such as removing trash, washing glass, walls and doors, sweeping floors, shampooing rugs, performing routine maintenance activities, and keeping indoor and outdoor surroundings of a building clean and orderly.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Janitor: A successful candidate must possess a high school diploma. Janitorial positions usually don’t require a higher education, since most of the training is done on the job. Sometimes, a driver’s license is required by employers who would require janitors to run errands.
Skills of a Janitor include but are not limited to: Knowledge of cleaning products, procedures and equipments, organization skills, time-management and interpersonal skills. He/she should also be patient, detail-oriented and physically fit.
Specific work elements of the job as a Janitor include but are not limited to: Cleaning building floors, gathering and emptying trash, cleaning and re-stocking restrooms, polishing furniture, cleaning windows, mirrors and glass partitions; dusting equipments, machines and walls; making adjustments to minor repairs of cooling, heating, plumbing, electrical or ventilating systems; restoring building interiors; moving heavy equipments and furniture; mowing, trimming and removing snow from lawns; setting up or removing decorations; and preventing insect or rodent infestation by spraying insecticides, among others.
