Journalist Job Description
The job of a Journalist involves informing people about what is happening locally or internationally via newspapers, radio, blogs, online magazines and other mediums. They perform research, interview people, analyze information and report stories or events, take pictures and record videos of people or events; and accurately convey news to the people.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Journalist: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, journalism, social studies, English, political science, economics, history, psychology, creative writing, business administration, communications, foreign languages, sociology or a related field. A master’s or doctorate degree in journalism is usually preferred by employers.
Skills of a Journalist include but are not limited to: Advanced written and verbal communication skills, computer software skills, good organizational and time management skills, advanced knowledge of wire and news services, excellent research skills, photography and graphic design skills, and ability to work well under extreme pressure, deadlines and under extreme conditions, such as typhoons, earthquakes, and the like.
Specific work elements of the job as a Journalist include but are not limited to: Gathering information, checking fats and preparing stories; uncovering developing stories to be published or broadcasted on print, online, radio or TV; writing opinion pieces or news stories; keeping updated with local, national and international affairs; and performing tasks of a copywriter, blogger, newspaper reporter, radio broadcaster, news correspondent or TV broadcaster, depending on which type of journalist he/she decides to pursue.
