Junior Accountant Job Description



The job of a Junior Accountant involves performing accounting duties, such as preparing journal entries, assisting monthly account closings, keeping balance sheets updated, and supporting the senior accountant in carrying out daily tasks of the accounting department.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Junior Accountant: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a business related field. Since junior accountants are entry-level jobs, they are given to accountants with less than 5 years of experience. After several years of experience and after passing a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, junior accounts become senior accountants as well.

Skills of a Junior Accountant include but are not limited to: Analytical and problem-solving skills, high mathematical aptitude, computer skills, leadership and management skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, time-management and organizing skills. He/she should also have the ability to interact easily with people and possess a high degree of personal integrity, initiative and attention to detail.

Specific work elements of the job as a Junior Accountant include but are not limited to: Performing general ledger operations, reconciling balance sheet accounts, assisting and preparing monthly financial statements and reports, assisting in accounts receivable and accounts payable, assisting in budgets and researching forecasts, assisting with tax returns and computations, assisting and coordinating audit procedures, as well as assisting in the implementation and maintenance of internal financial controls, among others.
