Nanny Job Description



The job of a Nanny involves providing care for children in his or her employer’s home. Tasks of a nanny vary widely, but they generally involve creating a safe, stimulating and nurturing environment wherein the child or children can develop mentally, physically and emotionally. Nannies usually perform housework duties as well.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Nanny: A successful candidate must possess a high school diploma and some training in child care and development. Although formal nanny training programs are not required, nannies should possess proven child care experience with references, First Aid & CPR certification and a clean driving record.

Skills of a Nanny include but are not limited to: Effective communication skills, good judgment skills, organizing and planning skills, high stress tolerance, adaptability and flexibility, multi-tasking and time management skills. Nannies should also be emotionally mature and possess high energy levels.

Specific work elements of the job as a Nanny include but are not limited to: Preparing baby bottles and other feeding equipments for baby; changing diapers and bathing babies; supervising baths of older kids; washing or ironing children clothes; planning and making meals for kids; scheduling children’s activities; transporting children to and from school; reading books to children and helping with homework; planning and implementing creative, educational and outdoors activities with children; keeping children’s room clean; reinforcing discipline for children; and doing light housework and errands, among others.
