Network Engineer Job Description
The job of a Network Engineer involves installing and maintaining computer communication networks between or within organizations. These types of engineers usually work as part of a company’s IT team or various IT networking firms. They are also called IT support engineer, helpdesk support, network support, network administrator, network architect or security engineer.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Network Engineer: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, mathematics, engineering or a related field. Employers consider network engineers even with at least 2 years in college, as long as they have practical experience. Certification in various technologies, such as Cisco, Novell, Windows or others can help engineers advance their careers.
Skills of a Network Engineer include but are not limited to: Excellent verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, time management and organizational skills, technical writing skills and ability to work as part of a team, independently and without supervision.
Specific work elements of the job as a Network Engineer include but are not limited to: Managing anti-spam, email or virus protection; setting up user accounts with passwords; monitoring network usage; installing and maintaining server software and hardware; solving problems and recommending more efficient IT solutions to businesses; ensuring all IT equipments meet industry standards; supervising subordinates and other staff; providing technical support to users, businesses and other clients; and planning future IT developments or projects, among others.
