Sales Representative Job Description
The job of a Sales Representative involves selling services and products to clients, usually within a designated location. Depending on the industry they work in, tasks of a sales representative vary widely, but they must be enthusiastic, friendly, energetic and possess a positive attitude.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Sales Representative: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in sales, marketing or a business related field. Sometimes, employers may hire sales representative even with non-business degrees or even a high school diploma, but candidates must have relevant experience in sales. Employers usually provide some kind of sales training before starting the job. When travel is included in the job description, sales representatives must have a valid driver’s license.
Skills of a Sales Representative include but are not limited to: Basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills, exceptional negotiation and persuasion skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, presenting and public speaking skills, marketing and sales skills, interpersonal skills, customer service skills, and knowledge of advertising and promotion techniques. Sales representatives must also be willing to travel and work on a flexible schedule.
Specific work elements of the job as a Sales Representative include but are not limited to: presenting and selling company services and products; preparing action plans to identify targets; following up on new leads and other referrals; identifying sales prospects; preparing presentations and sales contracts; developing sales materials; establishing current client relationships; preparing paperwork; managing account services; identifying and resolving client concerns; providing excellent customer service; communicating new services and products to existing clients; coordinating with sales team; and implementing sales activities, among others.
