Science Teacher Job Description
The job of a Science Teacher involves helping students learn about biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, marine science and other investigatory courses through hands-on activities, lab experiments, computer, field trips, mixed media materials and other resources. Depending on the subject they teach, science teachers may find work in middle or high school, and universities.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Science Teacher: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a field of science and a teaching certificate. To teach in college level, a master’s or doctor’s degree may be required.
Skills of a Science Teacher include but are not limited to: Excellent teaching skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, administrative skills, problem-solving skills, and advanced knowledge of various teaching materials. Science teachers should also be patient detail-oriented and think outside the box.
Specific work elements of the job as a Science Teacher include but are not limited to: participating on school committees, coordinating with science department heads and other teachers; planning and developing lesson plans based on current curriculum and student levels; meeting with students and their parents to discuss grades and other concerns about student progress; coordinating field trips; setting up and supervising laboratory experiments; arranging and coordinating speakers to attend lectures; attending professional development activities and seminars; updating student records; and participating in various industry events, among others.
