Technical Writer Job Description
The job of a Technical Writer involves explaining technical and scientific ideas into simple language, so that average readers may understand its meaning. Many technical writers are former professionals in a specific field, such as engineering, information technology, science, finance and other industries. Their job revolves writing articles, reports, press releases and other promotional materials that companies use to sell services or products.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Technical Writer: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, engineering, or other science fields. Some technical writers begin their careers as a research assistant or trainees in a company’s technical information department. Experience in working in newspaper and magazine is an advantage.
Skills of a Technical Writer include but are not limited to: Excellent writing skills, effective communication skills, organizational and time management skills, advanced computer skills with focus on word processing and publishing programs, extensive knowledge about technical subjects in their respective fields and ability to work well under pressure independently and as part of a team.
Specific work elements of the job as a Technical Writer include but are not limited to: Organizing materials and completing writing assignments based on set standards; maintaining records or files to be used in revisions; editing written materials prepared by other writers; interviewing or communicating with other professionals to determine technical specifications of the topic; reviewing published materials and making necessary changes; selecting illustrations, photographs and other art materials for the article; assisting in layout of materials before publication; reviewing trade catalogs; and attending industry events, among others.
