Ultrasound Technician Job Description
The job of an Ultrasound Technician involves using machines that direct sound waves into the human body, which then creates echo-mapped images of internal organs. Specializations in this field exist, so tasks of ultrasound technicians may vary between specializations.
Education/Experience Requirements for the job of an Ultrasound Technician: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in ultrasound technology. Knowledge of diagnostic ultrasound procedures and ability to operate technical equipments are important. Some employers may require candidates to have specializations, such as ophthalmology, neurosonology, and abdominal, vascular, gynecological, cardiovascular, or gynecologic sonography. Some technicians are assigned to a single hospital division, such as obstetrics.
Skills of an Ultrasound Technician include but are not limited to: Effective written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, technical writing skills, organizational skills and ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Specific work elements of the job as an Ultrasound Technician include but are not limited to: Performing ultrasound exams based on doctor prescriptions; operating and maintaining ultrasound equipments; explaining procedures to patients; obtaining patient history and medical records; assisting radiologists and other doctors; maintaining room with supplies and other resources; helping patients position properly during ultrasound exams; performing assessments on patients; recording records after ultrasound exams; attending industry events and seminars; meeting customer expectations and providing excellent customer service throughout the exam; and maintaining a safe and clean ultrasound room in accordance with laws and hospital policies, among others.
