Video Game Designer Job Description



The job of a Video Game Designer involves creating an extensive design document for video games. This document includes a vivid description of all parts of the game, including rules, plot, mission, artwork, flow charts, sound, and other special features. This document video guides game programmers, graphic artists, sound designers and other staff involved in the video game production.

Education/Experience Requirements for the job of a Video Game Designer: A successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in art, English, computer science, graphic design, computer programming or a related field. Video game designers should know at least three programming languages. Specializations such as game mathematics, artificial intelligence applications and programming special effects are an advantage.

Skills of a Video Game Designer include but are not limited to: Excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, technical writing skills, advanced computer skills, time management and organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving skills. He/she should also be extremely creative, detail-oriented, and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Specific work elements of the job as a Video Game Designer include but are not limited to: Communicating with various professionals to create an extensive video game documentation, brainstorming ideas and performing research to know current game demands; collaborating with various teams to determine revision requests; supervising developments of different teams such as writers, designers or programmers; helping programmers create a technical design document; assisting script writers with character dialogue; and recommending changes to documents made by animators, character designers, script writers, programmers and other development teams.
