How To Get A Librarian Job
Working in a Library is not the job it was ten or so years ago, it is so much more now. Libraries are now at the cutting edge of technology and they are often exciting places to work. Because of this, it is a career that is much sought after, and it can be difficult to land a job as a librarian. Below you will find some tips that will aid you in becoming a librarian.
1. Get the right qualifications. Although there is no standard requisite for landing a librarian position, the better educated you are, the easier it will be. Firstly of all you really need to pass your high school diploma, and after this, the best thing for you to do is to attain a bachelor’s degree, preferably in one of the arts based areas. You can also do a masters degree, and if you walk away with a Masters of library Science or something similar then you will put yourself in good stead for finding work.
2. Look for work experience. This is something you can do at the beginning of your quest for work as a librarian, or at the end. Many schools send pupils out on work experience, and you can try to gain some experience at this stage in your school life. Equally, you can do this at any point in your life by approaching the Libraries individually off your own back. It will give you invaluable experience, and will help you to develop some contacts.
3. Brush up on your IT skills. A lot of Libraries now have an electronic booking system and of course all of their systems will be computer run in this digital age. On top of this, many libraries have IT departments which you may be required to work in. Make sure you have a good understanding of the normal word processing programs before applying for any positions.
4. Gain an internship. After qualification, the best option for you may be to take an internship. Although this will not be full paid work, you will gain a lot of experience, and you will also make good contacts. As well as all of this, if you really impress and take to the job like a duck to water, you may even be offered a full time paying position.
Becoming a Librarian takes patience and good grades. Work hard and follow the steps above to give yourself a good chance of getting a librarian job soon.
