To get a PR job you really need to display a lot of the characteristics someone would normally display during the job role of Public Relations! You need to be a great networker, have decent research skills, communicate well both verbally and in the written word, and you need to present yourself well at all times. 1. Become a great networker. You need to network extremely well once you start to work in PR, and funnily enough it is exactly what you need to do to land the job in the first place! Get your name into the Public Relations world in your area by telling everyone you know that you are looking to break into the PR field. There are associations you can also join, such as the Public Relations society of America, and this will also help you to make contacts in your new career.
2. Volunteer. It might be possible for you to do an internship at one of the many Public Relations companies in your area. You need to approach them with a very well worded and well written letter pressing your claims that you would be great for them and you think you can learn a lot from them. Of course you cannot expect to get paid during this part of the process, but you will gain great experience, and y6ou could make contacts that could lead to a job in the industry.
3. Hone your resume and cover letter. Once you land a PR job, you will be writing letters and content of one sort or another every day. It is vitally important that whatever you send as part of any application is beautifully written, is persuasive and contains absolutely no mistakes whatsoever.
4. Increase your online presence. These days, networking has a lot to do with the online world. You need to be a member of several social networking sites and your presence there should see you being a willing and pro active member, and a helper to your peers. Make sure that you have a linkedin account, a Facebook account and a Twittter account and also make sure that you are active with all of them on a daily basis.
