How To Get A Photography Job
There are lots of different ways into the photography field and a lot of it depends on what sort of work you want to do. Before you decide this though, do you have the skills to do the job? You need to be artistic, understand the functions of a camera to a high degree, and be able to get on with all the people that you work with. Alongside this there can be pressure to find the right shots in time for deadlines, and creativity can sometimes be stymied by deadlines. Still think you have what it takes? Read our tips for finding a photography job below.
1. Try to qualify. A lot of people will tell you that the ability to take a photograph is not something measured by qualifications, but when employers have little else to go on, seeing a qualification is always going to impress them. Even if you already know that you are a great photographer, you should be thinking about training and getting some qualifications under your belt.
2. Put together a portfolio. You should isolate all of your best shots and use them in a portfolio. Try to organise them into different types of shots to show your versatility and interest in more than one field. Having a portfolio makes you look professional and keen to impress.
3. Decide what sort of photography role you would like. If you want to keep things artistic then you can set out to work on your own freelance, but work can be hard to come by at times. If you are looking for a role with a company you can expect your work to mostly be made up of a few types of photography. A lot of people opt for press or magazine photography, and you can also look into sports photography, portrait work and technical work. Be sure to decide what market you are interested in, and adjust your portfolio accordingly.
4. Keep shooting. You need to be constantly updating your portfolio to make improvements.
5. Target your potential places of employment, and send your resume. You should also include your portfolio in anything you send out, and remember that your portfolio should match with the type of business you are approaching.
