It is of course a hard profession and you need to be responsible, fearless and be able to think quickly on your feet. 1. Get a degree. This is not an essential for joining the force, but it will help you to move up the ranks when you do eventually land a position. Criminal justice would be a great degree to do for this job, but any degree will help.
2. Start to qualify. There are many phases of qualification to become a police officer, and the first will be written tests. You can buy books to help you with the sorts of questions you are likely to get. These tests are there to test your communication abilities.
3. Pass your oral exam. This in effect is your interview. You will be interviewed by several different police officers and it is important to approach this very seriously. It is a formal occasion and you should be dressed appropriately. Keep your hair short and your shoes polished! Respond to all questions and use the terms ‘Sir’, and ‘Mam’, when responding. Make sure you shake all of their hands when you leave your interview. These formalities count for a lot and they show that you know how to behave in a formal environment and you know how to adapt to situations.
4. Be honest. You will be asked to complete a background test. You will also be asked to carry out a polygraph test. Even if there are things you have done in the past that were wrong, it is important that you admit to them. The police have the means to find out and your application will be dead and buried if they find that you have lied. If you openly admit your mistakes then there is more chance for leniency.
