1. Develop some work to showcase your skills. It is very hard to break into this industry without experience or qualifications. If you are without either, there is nothing wrong with creating some of your own campaigns, even if they are imaginary, if it displays your ability to innovate and push something. Let’s face it – if you are in this position then you don’t have too much to lose and you may as well try to be a little bit creative in order to catch people’s eyes.

2. Get qualified. This is the best platform to find a position in Public Relations. Look at any degree’s that are related to the subject. A media degree would be good, and English degree would be good, and a public relations degree would be great.

3. Start to network. See who you can come across on social networking sites who are working in public relations and try to talk to them. You can ask their advice about breaking into the industry, and before you know it, you are on first name terms with someone who is actually in the industry yourself.

4. Develop your social networks. This is a great platform these days for public relations and you will find that a lot of PR companies actually run entire campaigns on social networking sites. You will be expected to have a great set of social network profiles and you should have a large set of contacts, especially in the PR field.

5. Stay in touch. Obviously you should be applying to many different public relations companies, but the key to getting a job is to stay in contact with the agencies that reject you. Often it will be because there are no vacancies at present, but you should keep contacting them every couple of months. They will be impressed with your tenacity and eventually you will wear them down!
