How To Get A Radio Job
Getting on to the radio is not the easiest thing in the world, but if you believe you have the talent to organise and entertain people in equal measures, maybe a career entertaining the population across the airwaves is beckoning you. 1. Start developing your resume from an early age. There are plenty of opportunities out there for you to get onto the airwaves. You might find that there are community radio stations in your local area on which you can broadcast for free. You will need to approach the station with a clear formula for how you want your show to go, but as long as your content is inoffensive, School, and many hospitals have hospital radio, which is normally run by volunteers.
2. Get the correct education. You should ideally be looking to get a broadcasting degree.
3. Enter competitions. Keep your eye out for these. There are often opportunities to enter competitions to be a radio disc jockey for a day on some of the larger stations. You will find these competitions online, and they are well worth entering for anyone who is interested in progressing their career.
4. Get up to speed with the technical requirements for the job. Often it is a case of learning when you are working on community radio. You need to be a dab hand with all of the audio controls - after all, you don’t want to broadcast your tea break!
5. Record a demo. This is where you put together a spoof show, and record the whole thing to send out to prospective radio companies. It is a great way to chow radio bosses that you have the ability to work in the industry and it is an opportunity to show off your talents and personality.
6. Get an internship. Be aware that a lot of these internships normally just involve helping out and you are very unlikely to get any air time. Don’t worry though. The contacts you make this time round might be the people that employ you in a few months time!
