How To Get A State Job
A state job is the sort of position where you can quite reasonably expect to be able to hold that job down for a long time providing your performance is up to scratch. To land a role within the state though, you need to be conscientious, well organised and keen to impress. If you think that you have all of these attributes, then maybe a state job is for you. Read out hints and tips to ensure you give yourself a good chance to get a state job.
1. Choose what area of work you would like to specialise in. State jobs provide a huge number of opportunities all across America, and it is fair to say that you will have to narrow down your choices and match them to your own skills. Try to think about what you are good at, what subjects you excelled in at school and what topics really interest you.
2. Create a resume which will sit alongside any state application form. Most state jobs tend to have pretty large application forms so your resume will need to be paired down somewhat. Get some examples of application forms for jobs within your state and remove all of the information from your resume which will be included in the state application form. You may have to completely re write your resume in order to retain flow now that some information is missing.
3. Find a job online. The best place to search for state jobs is at USAjobs.org. This site should have an enormous amount of jobs throughout the country in different states, and as long as you have done the preparatory work needed to narrow down your areas of interest, you should be able to finds several jobs that appeal to you.
4. Be willing to relocate. This all depends on which state jobs you are interested in and what the availability is like in your local state, but if you have quite a special interest, it may be that you have to look at moving states to be able to find the right job for you.
5. Dress smartly. State offices are places of business, and if you are lucky enough to be invited for interview, it is important that you dress accordingly, whatever position you are applying for. A suit and a tie if you are male, and a business dress if you are female.
