If you have a desire to break into the banking industry then perhaps the easiest way to do this is to become a Teller. If you have great people skills, are great with money and have a sunny disposition then you are probably ideally suited to the position, but that does not mean that one of these jobs is going to fall into your lap. Read our guide below to get some tips on how to best maximise your chances of getting a teller job.
1. Qualifications. This position, unlike many other banking positions, does not rely on having fantastic qualifications, but like anything else, if you have them, it is not going to hurt you. If you have some sort of finance degree, then you should be shouting this from the rooftops, but if you don’t, then you need to show how your life and work experience make you an ideal candidate for the role.
2. Customer Service. This role is all about customer service, and if you are going to be successful in any job application to become a teller, you need to show that you have plenty of people skills. It may be worth taking a course in communication skills to improve this aspect of yourself, and you can always talk about roles in previous positions where you have utilised your customer service skills.
3. Become a salesperson. I don’t mean this literally of course, but I mean that you have to focus very strongly on selling yourself. Why? Because this is actually in many respects a sales position. Your bank will probably want you to up sell clients from their standard accounts to premium accounts, and you will be expected to speak to people about mortgages and other financial services that the bank can offer. If you don’t have previous sales experience don’t worry. Make sure that you sell your other attributes in a way that makes it clear that you have plenty of sales technique, if not experience.
4. Dress smart. Remember that a bank is a financial institution, and dress accordingly. Your dress should be immaculate when you attend interview, without a hair out of place. Get a hair cut the day before and get your shoes shined!
Good luck finding a teller job. It is a great start in the banking industry, and from this position you can go far.
